Words of the Page

I love to read.

I read all kinds of books...except horror or cheap romance novels. (No offense to anyone who likes those, they just aren't my thing.)

Actually, as a mom, I have little time for actual reading so I listen to books. I listen while I cook, I listen while I clean, I listen while I do yard work, laundry, and bills.

I read for a lot of reasons. I love losing myself in fantastic worlds, magical realms, and thrilling adventures. But, I also love that connection to humanity that comes as my ideals, values, and opinions are re-affirmed, challenged, and sometimes even changed. My mind is opened to new ideas, different people, and varying experiences.

Whether the books are fiction or not, I am brought to an utterly real and singular truth. We are all different, but wow, we are all the same. If people could look at others and see themselves, I believe this world would be a lot more compassionate, forgiving, loving.

Anger would be replaced with kindness. Why? Because we would realize how everyone around us is struggling, is trying, is feeling, just like we are. We would want to help, support and befriend rather than tear-down, judge, and hate.

My new favorite book I finished this morning while doing laundry. For the first 37 chapters I was giggling, a lot. Sometimes outright snorting out laughter. Then, suddenly, I was crying.
"A Man Called Ove", a story filled with no two characters alike, makes you think. Makes you feel. Makes you love. So, for my book loving friends, if you haven't already devoured this book, get to the library.
